There is praise in Washington for the 1)transfer of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to the International War Crimes 2)Tribunal in The Hague. President Bush says it is an important step by the new leaders in Belgrade.
The president says the transfer of the former Yugoslav leader sends a message to all those who brought 3)tragedy and 4)brutality to the Balkans. He says they now know they will be held accountable for their crimes.
In a written statement, Mr. Bush says the decision by the government of Serbia is a strong sign of Belgrade's commitment to cooperation with the work of the tribunal. He says the United States is confident that cooperation will continue.
The president closes the statement with a promise to help the people of Yugoslavia - made up of Serbia and Montenegro as they continue to take the difficult steps toward 5)democratic and economic reform.
There are indications the Bush administration will make good on that promise Friday in Brussels, at a conference of aid 6)donors for Yugoslavia. The United States had conditioned its participation in the conference on the status of Mr. Milosevic.
Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, the action taken in Belgrade was 7)applauded by the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democrat Joseph Biden, of Delaware. He said he was 8)gratified by the decision to transfer Mr. Milosevic to the Hague, noting his rule resulted in four wars over ten years.
Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, spoke of the impact U.S. 9)sanctions had on developments in the region, saying the decision to 10)hand over the former Yugoslav leader proves that conditions on foreign aid can work.
And Madeleine Albright, who served as U.S. Secretary of State during the Clinton administration, talked to reporters about the long effort to bring Mr. Milosevic to justice. She said the transfer is a victory for the Serbian people.
