Turkey's Islamists Plan New Political Parties

Turkey's Islamists are planning new political parties after the chief opposition and pro-Islamic Virtue Party was banned for anti-secular activity.
The former chairman of the Virtue Party, Recai Kutan, says the new Islamic party that he is organizing will be 1)launched by mid July. He says its 2)primary aim will be to do away with what followers consider the antidemocratic laws in Turkey's 3)constitution.
Turkey's Constitutional Court 4)outlawed in June the pro-Islamic Virtue Party for anti-secular activities. The Court 5)expelled two of Virtue's 102 6)deputies from 7)parliament in a move that some observers say was made to avoid political turmoil.
Mr. Kutan says his new Islamic party enjoys the support of all 100 former Virtue deputies who are now independents in the 550 member Turkish 8)legislature. He says the new party will draw its strength from unity.
But even before the Virtue Party was 9)shut down by Turkey's highest 10)court, there were few signs of unity.
Virtue was troubled by internal divisions pitting so-called 11)traditionalists, represented by Mr. Kutan, against a 12)faction that calls itself the 13)reformists.
The reformists are also trying to form an Islamic party. They are led by Recep Tayyib Erdogan, the former mayor of Istanbul who was banned from office and politics in 1998 on charges of inciting a 14)religious rebellion because of a nationalist poem he recited.
Mr. Kutan argues that Mr. Erdogan cannot lead a new Islamic party because of such bans. But Mr. Erdogan insists that his offenses were 15)expunged by an 16)amnesty law passed last year. Turkish authorities have not commented on Mr. Erdogan's legal 17)status.
Meanwhile, Mr. Erdogan is putting the final touches on his Islamic party. His followers claim it enjoys the backing of more than 70 former Virtue Party lawmakers in the parliament.
