Israel Demands UN Turn Over Videotape

Israel is demanding the United Nations 1)turn over a videotape taken last year, one day after Hezbollah militants kidnapped three Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon. The tape reportedly documents the 2)vehicles used by the kidnappers, and other potentially useful information.
The United Nations is now admitting it has the video, shot by U.N. 3)peacekeeping troops. For months since the kidnapping on October 7, U.N. officials denied knowledge of the tape.
There has been no word of the kidnapped soldiers since they were 4)abducted by Hezbollah 5)guerrillas.
A statement by the Israeli defense ministry says the tape documents the vehicles used in the kidnapping. Still pictures from the tape seen in the Israeli news media show vehicles apparently 6)disguised to 7)resemble those used by UNIFIL, the U.N.'s peacekeeping force in Lebanon. A U.N. spokesman said in December that the guerrillas may have used UNIFIL emblems either stolen or bought on the black market.
U.N. spokesman Timor Goksel said the pictures were shot 18 hours after the kidnapping.
Israel is asking the U.N. for the original video, so intelligence officers can see if anything useful can be gleaned from the tape, as Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer explained. "And I hope by getting the 8)cassette in our hands, maybe through that we'll take our lesson and understand what exactly happened," he said.
Israeli officials are plainly upset that the United Nations for months denied it had the tape, even as Israel was insisting it existed. It is not clear how Israel learned of the videotape.
Israel has long been skeptical of the United Nations, and many Israelis consider the U.N., if not an 9)adversary, at least biased against the Jewish state. The case of the missing videotape is not likely to improve the world body's image in Israel.
