Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres says Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat could win back public opinion in Israel if he would begin talking peace. The comments by Mr. Peres came in an interview published Thursday.
"When it comes to Israel," Mr. Peres says of Yasser Arafat, "he can win with words rather than with bombs." The foreign minister told the Jerusalem Post that winning the trust of the Israeli people is within reach for Yasser Arafat. 1)Citing the 2)ups and downs of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's popularity, Mr. Peres says Israeli public opinion can be changed 3)impressively in a short time.
Long before he became a partner in the peace process, the Palestinian president was regarded by Israel's government and most of its people as a terrorist. That changed, particularly during the early 1990s, with Mr. Arafat's famous 4)handshake with then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on the White House lawn. But since the intifada, the Palestinian uprising that began last year, Mr. Arafat's standing has 5)plunged in Israel. Many people here think he has the ability to stop the violence, but has chosen not to do so.
Fueling the distrust is a press report this week that contends Mr. Arafat has ordered the killing of one Jewish 6)settler each day. Foreign Minister Peres told the English-language Jerusalem Post he is unaware of any such directive, and considers the report "7)bizarre."
Shimon Peres, a member of the Labor Party, is the most 8)leftist member of the right-leaning government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Mr. Peres says there should not be any effort to de-legitimize Mr. Arafat. He says the dispute between Israel and the Palestinians is not a "duel between two leaders," but a 9)confrontation between two peoples. He says Mr. Arafat represents the hopes and disappointments of the Palestinian people.
