[00:04.59]he promoted and fostered education.

[00:10.06]the Ok Kuo Night School,
[00:12.46]he also served as its principal
[00:15.09]for over ten years.
[00:17.17]His children went to public school,
[00:19.47]but they also received schooling a
[00:21.87]t home from tutors hired
[00:23.73]from Hong Kong to teach them Chinese.
[00:26.47]Yip Sang took great pleasure
[00:29.20]in quizzing his offspring
[00:30.84]about their lessons.
[00:32.38]His philosophy was that
[00:35.22]by moderating the children’s
[00:37.08]Canadian education with fundamental Chinese,
[00:39.81]the equation would result in
[00:42.33]wellrounded, responsible citizens.
[00:44.74]As a keen advocate of education
[00:48.68]in Canada, Yip Sang also sponsored
[00:51.63]education abroad in China.
[00:54.03]The lingnan University
[00:57.43]and Toishan Middle School
[00:59.72]in his hometown of Canton were
[01:01.59]established with his help.
[01:04.32]Throughout his life, he maintained
[01:07.82]an active role in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
[01:11.21]He was one of eleven men,
[01:13.51]his contemporaries, who founded
[01:16.25]the Chinese Benevolent Association,
[01:18.22]one component of which
[01:20.84]looked after the ill,
[01:22.27]elderly or destitute Chinese
[01:23.90]in the absence of their families.
[01:26.20]When he died at the age of 82,
[01:29.05]Yip Sang was not only one
[01:32.22]of the wealthiest merchants
[01:33.75]in Vancouver, he was also considered
[01:35.94]a pillar of the community.
[01:37.36]Yip Sang’s descendants continue to
[01:41.63]honour his values and remain
[01:43.16]active in the Vancouver Community |
