1. A Pakistani-born Virginia man arrested on terrorism charges says he cannot afford an attorney. Farooque Ahmed did not enter a plea and has been ordered held without bond. The FBI says Ahmed cased Washington DC area subway stations in what he thought was an al-Qaeda plot to bomb and kill commuters.

 

2. UN investigators have taken samples of foul-smelling waste trickling behind a Nepalese peacekeeping base, trying to determine if that is the cause of a recent cholera outbreak. So far, the UN is denying that the base is the source. More than 4,000 people have been sickened because of the outbreak.

 

3. A Notre Dame student is dead after the tower he was using to tape football practice toppled over. The cause of the accident isn't known. But winds were gusting to 51 miles per hour at the time. University President Rev. John Jenkins says the school is deeply saddened by this tragic loss.

 

4. The San Francisco Giants have jumped out to a one-game lead in the World Series. The Giants beat up on Texas Rangers' ace Cliff Lee, scoring seven runs off the lefty in just 4-2/3 innings. Final score, 11 to 7. Game two is tonight.
