1. President Barack Obama says he's ready to work with the GOP, and he wants to start with taxes and spending. The president called Tuesday's election a "shellacking" for Democrats. The president says he hopes to learn from the setback just as other presidents have.

 

2. Qantas says it's suspending all flights of its Airbus 380 jetliners after a midair engine problem forced an emergency landing. Witnesses say they heard a blast and saw debris fall to the ground. Qantas denies there was any explosion.

 

3. A tropical storm warning has been issued in Jamaica as Tomas approaches. The storm is also threatening to hit earthquake-ravaged Haiti as a hurricane. The storm is located about 350 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince with winds near 50 miles per hour.

 

4. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says worries that the Fed's plan to aid the economy could unleash inflation are overblown. Bernanke announced Wednesday that the Fed would buy 600 billion dollars worth of government bonds. The move is aimed to make loans cheaper, spur spending and invigorate the economy.
