The United States has 1)condemned Monday's suicide attack in Israel, while urging Israel not to respond with military action that would continue a cycle of violence.
U.S. officials are concerned that the bombing at a train station in northern Israel will 2)trigger a new round of retaliation and attacks that will further 3)diminish hopes for last month's U.S.-brokered cease-fire to take hold.
State Department spokesman Richard Boucher called the bloody attack a "4)heinous" crime, and urged Yasser Arafat's Palestinian Authority to "5)unambiguously" condemn it, and take steps to bring to 6)justice those responsible.
Mr. Boucher, who spoke even as Israel was carrying out 7)retaliatory shelling in the West Bank, said the United States hoped Israel would exercise "continued restraint," and not allow the cycle of violence to continue.
He said there can be no military solution to the conflict, and the way forward is through security cooperation and strong efforts by both sides.
The Bush administration is in almost-constant contact with the parties. Secretary of State Colin Powell telephoned Mr. Arafat Saturday to urge steps to calm the situation, and the 8)deputy assistant secretary for the Near East, David Satterfield, is 9)shuttling in the region.
