Arab foreign ministers meeting in Cairo Wednesday renewed their support for the Palestinians, strongly 1)condemned Israeli action, and called on the G-8 group of industrialized nations to play a more active role in trying to stop the 10-month-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
During a one day meeting at Arab League headquarters in Cairo, foreign ministers and 2)delegates said they would ask the G-8 nations to take up the Israeli-Palestinian crisis during their meeting in Italy beginning Friday. The Arab ministers are calling on the G-8 to send international observers to the Palestinian territories to 3)monitor the situation.
The Palestinians have long called for such an observer force, but Israel has rejected the idea.
The Arab Ministers also strongly condemned Israel's policy of 4)assassinating Palestinian activists and demolishing Palestinian homes. They said Israel is being led by, what they called, a "rogue" government.
Ten months of Israeli-Palestinian clashes have left more than 600 people dead, most of them Palestinians.
A U.S. brokered cease-fire, accepted by both sides a month ago, has yet to be implemented and there is increasing concern the conflict will 5)escalate and lead to wider, regional unrest.
The crisis has already led to 6)strained relations between the United States and some of its Arab allies. There is a widespread 7)resentment among Arabs for what they consider Washington's "blind support" for Israel.
At the same time, Arab leaders have come under public criticism in their own countries for not taking a tougher line against Israel.
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak struck a 8)pessimistic note about the future in an interview with the Chinese News Agency, Xinhua. Mr. Mubarak said he sees no 9)solution to the Israeli-Palestinian 10)conflict as long as Ariel Sharon holds power in Israel.
