Roadblocks Abandoned as Ethnic Albanian Gunmen Withdraw in Macedonia

Reports say 1)ethnic Albanian 2)guerrillas are following through on promises to 3)withdraw from positions near the Macedonian city of Tetovo. If the agreement signed Wednesday is upheld, it would give a boost to renewed peace talks.
International monitors say roadblocks have been removed on the road from Tetovo to the Kosovo border, freeing up travel at least to the ethnic Macedonian village of Lesok.
Residents in Tetovo town also report that a 4)checkpoint previously 5)manned by the ethnic Albanians, known as the National Liberation Army NLA), has been 6)abandoned. However, it was still not clear if the NLA would withdraw completely from all 7)territory it took over since a July 5 cease-fire.
The rebels agreed to the pull-back Wednesday in a NATO-brokered agreement with NLA leaders based in Kosovo. The agreement is aiming to reduce rising military tensions following three days of heavy fighting.
NATO Secretary General George Robertson and European Union (EU) foreign policy 8)representative Javier Solana arrived in Skopje Thursday for a new round of talks intended to restart internationally-mediated peace talks. Those talks, led by U.S. diplomat James Pardew and EU envoy Francois Leotard, broke down last week over ethnic Albanian demands for greater language rights.
Mr. Pardew said that in the 9)ensuing heavy fighting, both sides "walked right up to 10)brink." Mr. Pardew added after the agreement Wednesday, "maybe they've made a decision that peace was better than war, because that's exactly where they were heading."
