1. Libya's opposition says troops loyal to Moammar Gadhafi are bombarding Misrata, the only city in western Libya not under Gadhafi's control. The artillery and tank fire comes despite a barrage of missiles and air strikes from U.S. and European forces aimed at taking out Gadhafi's air defenses and other military targets.

 

2. In Rio de Janeiro, President Barack Obama praised Brazil's transition from dictatorship to democracy as a model for the Arab world. Without specifically mentioning the military action in Libya, the president drew a connection to the events there and throughout the Middle East.

 

3. Japan's Health Ministry has advised a village near a crippled nuclear plant not to drink tap water due to elevated levels of radioactive iodine. Meanwhile, two units of the plant have cooled down enough to be declared under control.

 

4. Britain's Prince William wrapped up a trip to New Zealand and Australia by meeting with survivors of deadly flash floods. William's visit, which comes as anticipation builds around his wedding next month, has been relatively low key.
