1. President Barack Obama says there's still time to reach a budget deal and avoid a government shutdown this weekend. He says failing to do so could disrupt the country’s economy just as it's getting back on track.

 

2. The South is picking up the pieces after violent storms ripped through the region overnight into the morning. A number of deaths are being blamed on the weather. Officials say they have reports of two dozen tornados touching down.

 

3. NATO is accusing Libyan government forces of using civilians as human shields. It says Moammar Gadhafi’s forces have moved tanks and other weapons to civilian areas so pilots won't target them.

 

4. Billionaire British adventurer Richard Branson has announced plans to travel to the deepest parts of the world's oceans in a single-person submarine. He says he hopes to set as many as 30 world records with the dives.
