There are signs of recovery in the United States with new figure showing the economy is contracting at a slower than expected pace. It shrank at 1% in the second quarter and the US President Barack Obama says it shows the economy's heading in the right direction. Despite the positive news, he's warned of more pain to come. Next week's report on unemployment is expected to show hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost.

US markets made the modest gains. The Dow Jones closed 17 points higher. European stocks were weaker. The FTSE finished half of a percent lower. The local market finished the week 54 points higher. And the Australian dollar’s buying 83.5 US cents.

The Airline Industry is facing a major maintenance overhaul. Airlines across the world operating versions of the European Airbus have been ordered to replace air speed sensors on their planes, following the crash of an Air France flight two months ago.

The Australian pork industry says there is no threat to consumers despite some pigs in New South Wales testing positive to swine flu.

And the US government's scheme that pays consumers to trade in their old cars for new ones has proved so successful the 1 billion dollars funds run out of money after just one week.

That's ABC Business News.
