The bodies of two Australian airmen killed in the Vietnam War will arrive back in Sydney this morning. Pilot Officer Robert Carver and Flying Officer Michael Herbert were Australia’s last two servicemen missing in action from the Vietnam War. Their remains were found in the Laotian border in June, more than 30 years after their plane went down.

 

Police have confirmed that Victorian Water Minister Tim Holding is missing in bush land. The 37-year-old Labor Minister went walking on Mount Feathertop in Melbourne’s northeast. He was expected back at 4:00 yesterday afternoon.

 

Japan has a new Prime Minister after a landslide election. That’s all the governments suffer a historic election defeat. Opposition Leader Yukio Hatoyama’s Democratic Party of Japan won more than 300 of 480 seats in Parliament. The Prime Minister Tara Aso has resigned as the head of Liberal Democratic Party.

 

And residents in New South Wales have been warned to prepare for a difficult fire season with fires already burning on the north and the south coast. The Rural Fire Service says it expects strong winds to pick up again today.

 

In Los Angeles’ bushfires there are burning out of control, more than 4,000 homes have been evacuated, and a further 10,000 homes are under threat.
