Voters’ support for Malcolm Turnbull is lower now than when he was elected Opposition Leader a year ago. The latest Nielsen Poll shows Mr. Turnbull’s approval rating rose 4 points this month to 35%, but the same rating was 45% this time last year. Today’s survey also shows 41% of voters support the Opposition’s call to wind back the stimulus package.

The Australian Racing Board will be hoping to resolve a dispute about whipping rules when it meets jockeys today. Jockeys walked off the job last week, angry at new rules that limit the number of times a horse can be whipped during a race. Owners, trainers and jockeys say they are prepared to continue their fight and disrupt the Spring Racing Carnival if necessary.

An Australian-led team of researchers may have scored an important breakthrough in the treatment of hepatitis C. They’ve identified a variant in a gene that can inhibit the treatment for chronic hepatitis. Researchers say the finding could help treatment of the disease.

And five-time champion Roger Federer is through to the US Open tennis final after beating Serbian fourth-seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets. He will now meet Argentine Juan Martin del Potro in tomorrow’s decide-up.
