An Indonesian governor says he'll let 78 Sri Lankan asylum seekers be taken off from an Australian customs ship only if he's given a guarantee they won't stay longer than a month. The asylum seekers were due to be moved to an Indonesian detention facility on Monday.

 October has become the deadliest month for US troops in Afghanistan since the war began. Eight soldiers have been killed in multiple bomb attacks in the south of the country. Fifty-five American soldiers have died in Afghanistan this month.

 The Prime Minister is proposing new rules for strategic planning in Australia's major cities. Speaking in Sydney last night, Kevin Rudd outlined plans to meet future housing needs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

 The second day of the war crimes trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has resumed in Hague without the defendant. Karadzic has refused to attend, saying he hasn't had long enough to prepare his defense, he denies 11 charges of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. All charges relate to the Bosnian War in the 1990s.

 And Champion Wallabies flanker George Smith has been demoted to the bench, ahead of Australia's Bledisloe Cup encounter with New Zealand on Saturday.
