An Australian academic who has been expelled from Fiji will leave the country this morning. Fiji-born Professor Brij Lal was briefly detained yesterday before being told he had 24 hours to leave. He’d given several interviews to Australian and New Zealand media after the High Commissioners from both countries were kicked out. Fiji’s Acting High Commissioner to Australia is due to fly back to Fiji this morning.

An investigation will be launched into how a boat carrying Sri Lankan asylum seekers sank  north of the Cocos Islands. Twelve people on board are thought to have died. The search mission was abandoned yesterday after it was decided there was no chance of finding any more survivors.

Two men have been stabbed to death at a psychiatric hospital in Melbourne overnight. A third man has been arrested over the incident. All three men were patients of the Thomas Embling hospital in Melbourne’s inner northeast.

And the ABC’s Managing Director Mark Scott is proposing an ambitious expansion of the broadcaster's international presence. Mr. Scott wants the ABC to broadcast beyond the Asia Pacific region, into Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. The multi-million-dollar plan would rival the BBC and CNN.
