New Zealand has rejected a Federal Government proposal to take some of the asylum seekers from an Australian Customs ship. The proposal is part of the government’s plan to try to resolve the standoff involving 78 asylum seekers on the Oceanic Viking. The Foreign Minister met Indonesian officials overnight. He says he’s confident the problem will be resolved soon.

“If the matter is not resolved by Friday, we fully expect that the diplomatic clearance for the Oceanic Viking will again be extended.”

The Sri Lankans have been on board the ship in Indonesian waters for more than three weeks and are refusing to go ashore.

At least 32 people have died in another suicide bombing in Pakistan. More than forty others were injured when the blast went off in the town of Charsadda, near the northeastern city of Peshawar. It’s the third suicide attack in the region in as many days.

And Trooper Mark Donaldson, the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross since the Vietnam War has met the Queen as part of Remembrance Day celebrations. Back home, people across the nation are preparing to pause to recognize the service of Australians in conflicts overseas.

And that’s your ABC News up-to-date. I’ll be back in an hour with more. Bye for now.
