New figures show Australia's greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 82% since 1990. The increase is mainly due to rising emissions from rural areas hit by bushfires and drought. Australian laid efforts to change the way these emissions accounted have been causing deep divisions in Copenhagen. Environment ministers from 48 countries have wrapped up talks and agreed in a new deal to replace the Kyoto Protocol. The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd leaves for Denmark today.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is in hospital after being attacked at a rally in Milan. Mr. Berlusconi had just finished giving a speech to thousands of supporters when he was punched in the face. He was seen looking dazed and bloodied if what appeared to be a number of cuts. Police arrested a man at the scene.

The Australian Medical Association says the government has missed an opportunity to slash Medicare red tape. The government has announced changes that will encourage doctors to spend more time with their patients, including increasing the rebate for longer GP consultations, but doctors say while the measures are a good start, they don’t go far enough.

And an investigation is underway into what sparked a disturbance at Tasmania’s Risdon Prison. Two prison guards were hospitalized yesterday after being assaulted by inmates.
