Firefighters are bracing for another day of extreme weather conditions in Australia's southeast. Victoria's first code red fire warning is in place for the Wimmera in the state's west while catastrophic fire warnings are in force for 10 of South Australia's 15 fire districts. The mercury set to climb to 42 degrees across the state for the fifth day in a row.   

An Indian man murdered in Melbourne has been buried near his family's home in Punjab. Hundreds of mourners paid tribute to Nitin Garg, who was stabbed to death last week. His family has announced a 10,000-dollar reward for anyone with information that leads to his killer's arrest.

Togo has pulled out of the African Cup of Nations in Angola after three people died in a rebel ambush on its team convoy. The Togolese Prime Minister has ordered the team home immediately despite players saying they wanted to stay and play the African Nations Cup in honour of those killed.

A new report says Western Australia and the ACT have the best-performing economies in Australia. Analysis from CommSec ranked each state and territory against eight key indicators. New South Wales' economy was named the country's worst.
