Investigation is underway into security at schools after the stabbing murder of a 12-year-old boy. Brisbane schoolboy Elliott Fletcher died yesterday after he was stabbed during a fight at St. Patrick’s College in Shorncliffe. A 13-year-old student is due to appear in the Brisbane Children’s Court today charged with his murder. A Mass will be held at the school this morning.

 

The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s popularity has slipped to a new low in the latest Newspoll. The poll in today’s Australian newspaper shows Mr. Rudd has dropped three points to 55%. Tony Abbott has gained one point with 27% support for him as preferred Prime Minister. But the Government still leads the Coalition on a two-party preferred basis.

 

More than 18 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in a train collision in Belgium. The two trains collided in peak hour in Halle, southwest of Brussels. It’s believed one of the trains ignored a red light. But investigators are trying to work out whether rail signals were working properly.

 

And Shane Watson has won the Allan Border Medal for Australian Cricketer of the Year. The all-rounder won cricket’s highest honor through a vote by his peers and umpires. Batsman Simon Katich took home the Test Player of the Year award.
