Queensland-based mining company Macarthur Coal has delayed a shareholder meeting, planned to vote on a takeover offer. Shareholders were due to decide on a proposal from the Noble Group on Monday. But the meeting has been postponed for a week that's to allow investors more time to consider the deal. Macarthur's board rejected an offer from US company Peabody earlier this week.

 

A leading ratings agency has downgraded Greece's credit rating by two notches. The European Union says members of the bloc are ready to respond to a call for help. Greece needs nearly 17 billion dollars by next month to cover its debts, and investors say a bailout is increasingly likely.

 

To the markets now, and Greek bank shares closed 7.1 percent higher over speculation on a pending agreement. European shares rallied to post a sixth consecutive weekly gain. The FTSE also closed higher. US stocks finished strongly marking a sixth straight week of gains for the three indices. And Australian shares also on a gain streak with nine weeks of rises.

 

And Qantas frequent flyers have received an apology email from the company's CEO for recent disruptions in its international network. Seven planes have suffered equipment failures over the past two weeks, but the airline says safety was never an issue.
