Rescuers and aid workers are pouring into western China where a strong earthquake has left nearly 600 people dead. Another 10,000 were hurt when the quake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale caused buildings, roads and bridges to collapse. Many survivors have been left without shelter in near freezing conditions.

 

Two senior crew members of a Chinese coal carrier that ran aground off central Queensland will face court today. They have been charged with causing damage to the Great Barrier Reef. Marine authorities say the incident has left the biggest shipping scar ever seen on the reef.

 

Also making news this morning, the New South Wales Government says it'll decide tomorrow whether to support Kevin Rudd's push to reform the health system. Victoria and Western Australia are still resisting the proposals and the chances of a deal at next Monday's Council of Governments meeting appear slim.

 

Fire has destroyed a carpet underlay and glue factory south of Brisbane. More than 80 firefighters were called in to fight the blaze.

 

And a volcano in Iceland has erupted for the second time in less than a month. Its melted ice had forced 800 residents to flee rising floodwaters.
