The UN Security Council has imposed new sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear program. The council voted in favor of a fourth round sanctions, including tighter finance curbs and an expanded arms embargo. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was unperturbed. He dismissed the sanctions, saying they ought to be thrown in the rubbish bin.

The Prime Minister was asked just two questions about his new Resource Super Profits Tax at a community cabinet meeting in Perth last night. Instead the crowd of 500 asked about issues including the environment, community projects, animal welfare, education and pensions.

The bodies of two Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan are being flown back to Australia after a service in the United Arab Emirates. Hundreds of soldiers and officials attended the memorial in Tarin Kowt. And yesterday, four more NATO soldiers were killed when their helicopter was shot down.

East Timor's president has criticized Australia's AusAID program for cutting funding to one of the few affective aid projects in his country. In a letter to Australia's ambassador in East Timor, Jose Ramos Horta condemns the decision to cut money for a project that helps Timorese entrepreneurs.

And the US President Barack Obama has described the situation in Gaza as unsustainable and he's promised millions of dollars in new aid for the territory.
