 The eighth and final film in the Harry Potter series has smashed the US box office record for an opening weekend, summoning up $A157 million in ticket sales. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has beaten the record by almost $US10 million. The first seven films have earned more than six billion dollars worldwide. 

 
Today marks the 45th birthday of the second longest running children's television programme in the world.

Since 1966, Play School has sung its way into the hearts of eight out of 10 pre-school children every week. Many of its presenters have gone on to have acclaimed acting careers and the toys are icons in their own right. Play School was inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame in 2006.

And around 150 of Australia's leading actors have begun a campaign against making it easier to cast foreign actors in local productions. The actors' equity union says the proposed changes would reduce Australian actors to bit parts and supporting roles.
