Bush Vows to Punish US Terror Attack Plotters

President Bush has sought to reassure the nation and the world that the United States has taken steps to protect America and Americans following apparent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. He also 1)vowed to punish those responsible.

Mr. Bush was in Florida at the time of the attacks and immediately made plans to return to Washington. But for 2)security reasons, he was flown to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

"I want to reassure the American people that the full resources of the federal government are working to assist local authorities to save lives and help the 3)victims of these attacks," the president said. "Make no mistake, the United States will 4)hunt down and punish those responsible for these 5)cowardly acts."

Mr. Bush said the United States has taken all 6)appropriate security 7)precautions to protect the American people and continue government functions. He said the U.S. military is on high 8)alert.

The President remains in constant contact with his national security team and cabinet. He said he has been in touch with world leaders and members of the U.S. Congress.

Mr. Bush asked for prayers for the victims of the attacks and their families.

"The resolve of our great nation is being tested. Make no mistake, we will show the world that we will pass this test," Mr. Bush said.

The White House was among key federal buildings that were 9)evacuated after the attacks in New York and Washington.
