[00:46.81]yes,I would like to give a short presentation on British music and arts festivals.
[00:54.52]First,I will briefly speak on the topic of the different styles of British  music.
[01:01.91]Then,I will quickly list and outline
[01:06.22]some of the most famous arts festivals in Britain.
[01:11.21]Classical music in Britain is a minority interest.
[01:16.41]Few classical musicians, whether British or foreign,
[01:21.82]become well known to the general public.
[01:25.92]When they do,it is usually because of circumstances
[01:31.40]which have nothing to do with their music.
[01:35.40]For example, the Italian opera tenor Pavarotti
[01:41.20]became famous in the country when an aria sung by him was used by the BBC
[01:48.80]to introduce its 1990 football World Cup coverage.
[01:54.68]Despite this low profile, thousands of British people are dedicated musicians
[02:01.76]and many public libraries have a well-stocked music section.
[02:07.45]Several British orche-stras,singers and choirs have international reputations.
[02:14.35]In the 1960s,British artists had a great influence on the development of music
[02:22.94]in the modern or 'pop' style.
[02:27.83]The Beatles and other British musical groups
[02:32.61]were responsible for several innovations
[02:37.20]which were then used by musicians in America and the rest of the world.
[02:43.21]These include the writing of words and music by the performers themselves,
[02:50.32]and more active audience participation.
[02:54.71]Since the 1960s,popular music in Britain
[03:00.11]has been an enormous and profitable industry.
[03:05.52]The Beatles were awarded the highly prestigious honour of the  MBE,
[03:12.42]or Member of the British Empire, for their value as British exports.
[03:19.03]Within Britain, the total sales of various kinds of musical recordings
[03:25.92]are more than 200 million every year,
[03:30.52]and the vast majority of that is popular music.
[03:35.93]Many worldwide trends have come out of Britain, and British pop artists
[03:42.41]have been active in at tempting to cross the boundaries
[03:47.79]between popular music, folk music and classic music.
[03:54.08]Questions 34-35 according to Section 4 (1).
[03:56.09]Fill in the blanks. write no more than one word for each answer.
[03:58.08]34.In Britain, classical music performers often only become famous
[04:00.07]because of circumstances that have little to do with their (  ).
[04:02.08]35.Of the 200-million plus recordings sold in Britain each year,
[04:04.06]the style most often bought is (  ) music.
[04:06.07]Section 4 (2).Damon Albarn:Now,on to Britain' s arts festivals.
[04:10.85]There are many festivals throughout Britain during the year,
[04:16.05]but these are the most well known.
[04:20.34]First,Aldeburgh,this festival takes place during June in East Anglia.
[04:28.54]The focus is on classical music in a relatively informal atmosphere.
[04:35.15]In August,Scotland holds the Edinburgh International Festival,
[04:41.84]where one can view all the performing arts, including avant-garde.
[04:48.65]This is a world-famous event
[04:52.55]in which there are more than ten different performances every day
[04:58.24]in different locations around the city.
[05:02.55]At about the same time,Wales  holds the Royal National Eisteddfod,
[05:09.45]which includes music, poetry and dance from around the world.
[05:15.45]This festival mostly is in the form of competitions,
[05:21.25]with special categories for Welsh performing arts.
[05:26.56]The so-called "Proms" is held July through September in London.
[05:33.04]For this classical music performance almost
[05:37.03]all the seats are taken out of the Albert Hall,
[05:42.13]where the performance is held,
[05:45.42]and the audience stands or walks around instead of sitting.
[05:51.61]Also during the summer,at Glyndebourne,
[05:57.20]one is able to enjoy listening to opera
[06:01.69]in the setting of a large country house in Sussex.
[06:06.89]The Glastonbury and Reading festivals
[06:11.59]both occur in late summer and last about a week.
[06:16.50]These are probably the two most well established rock and pop music festivals.
[06:23.79]The Bradford and Cambridge festivals
[06:28.60]take a slower place,emphasizing folk music.
