Thick cloud is spreading across much of eastern Australia. It's in a trough and is triggering showers and potentially severe storms. The storm is particularly affecting northern New South Wales and southeast Queensland. Cloud about the Top End is causing scattered storms, mostly clear elsewhere.

And taking a look at the states.

In Queensland. Early patchy thundery rain across the southern tropics and the central coast. Thundery rain is expected over the southern interior.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop about the Darling Down southeast coast, and Wide Bay and Burnett district.

In New South Wales, partly cloudy in the west of the state. Scattered showers gradually clearing on the central parts of the coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere.

There is also the chance of thunderstorms for Victoria's eastern districts this afternoon. Fine over the far northwest. Isolated showers elsewhere.

In Tasmania, it will be cloudy with areas of rain and isolated thunderstorms about the north and west. Highland snowfalls to 1,100 meters later in the day.

Isolated showers about South Australia's agricultural area are becoming scattered about the southern coasts and ranges during the morning and early afternoon. Gradually contracting southwards.

WA can expect isolated showers in areas of drizzle on the coast between Albany and Elizabeth Bay. This will clear by the afternoon.

In the Northern Territory, it will be sunny and cooler in the Alice Springs, north of the Alice. Isolated showers and storms can be expected in the afternoon and evening.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, fine and sunny in most of the capitals.
