 1. The White House says President Barack Obama has called House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, to urge them to end the payroll tax cut standoff. Obama says he wants the House back in session to pass a two-month extension of the cuts previously approved by the Senate.

 
 
 
2. In New Jersey, crews are clearing the wreckage from the highway plane crash that killed five people yesterday. The debris from that accident is said to be scattered over at least a half mile.
 
 
 
3. The Federal Aviation Administration is working to reduce fatigue among airline pilots. The FAA has issued a new rule that will limit the number of hours a pilot can be scheduled for duty. That limit will depend on start time and the number of time zones crossed.
 
 
 
4. The holiday shopping season is shaping up to be bigger than anyone expected. According to one research firm, sales from November through last Saturday rose 2.5%. Almost 32 billion dollars has been spent online so far. That's a 15% increase from a year ago.
