question: Did Mr. Darcy invite Elizabeth Bennet to dance with him?

TEXT

Elizabeth Bennet had been obliged , by the scarcity of gentlemen, to sit down for two dances; and during part of that time, Mr. Darcy had been standing near enough for her to overheara conversation between him and Mr. Bingley, who came from the dance for a few minutes to press his friend to join it.

``Come, Darcy,'' said he, ``I must have you dance. I hate to see you standing about by yourself in this stupid manner. You had much better dance.''

``I certainly shall not. You know how I detestit, unless I am particularly acquainted with my partner. Your sisters are engaged, and there is not another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with. You are dancing with the only handsome girl in the room,'' said Mr. Darcy, looking at the eldest Miss Bennet.

``Oh! she is the most beautiful creature I ever beheld ! But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say very agreeable. Do let me ask my partner to introduce you.''

``Which do you mean?'' and turning round , he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till catching her eye, he withdrew his own and coldly said, ``She is tolerable ; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me.''
Mr. Bingley followed his advice. Mr. Darcy walked off ; and Elizabeth remained with no very cordial feelings towards him. She told the story however with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous.

They returned in good spirits to Longbourn, the village where they lived, and of which they were the principal inhabitants.

Notes To Text

1, there is not another woman in the room whom it would not be a punishment to me to stand up with.
一、常用做插入语的副词? indeed的确, surely无疑, however然而, obviously显然, frankly坦率地说, naturally自然, luckily (或happily) for sb. ? Surely, she won?t go to China Telecom with you.? ?
二、常见的作插入语的形容词或其短语? true真的, funny真可笑, strange to say说也奇怪, needless to say不用说, most impor tant of all最为重要, worse still更糟糕的等。?例如: Strange to say (或True), he should have done such a thing.? ?
三、常用作插入语的介词短语? in a few words(或in sum, in short)简而言之, in other words换句话说, in a sense在某种意义上, in general一般说来, in my view在我看来, in his opinion(judgment)按照他的意见(判断), in conclusion总之, in summary概括地说, in fact事实上, in the first place首先, in addition此外, of course当然, to our knowledge据我们所知, to my joy(delight, satisfaction)使我欣慰(高兴、满意)的, to their surprise(astonis hment, amazement)使他们惊奇的, to her regret (disappointment)使她遗憾(失望)的, for instance(或example)例如, as a matter of fact事实上等。? Of course, he did not succeed for the lack of experience.? ?
四、常用作插入语的不定式短语? to be sure无疑地, to sum up概括地说, to tell the truth老实说等。例如 To be sure, community service can aid re?employment.?
I am sure我可以肯定地说, I believe我相信, I wonder我不知道, you know你知道, you see你明白, that is也就是说, it seems看来是, as I see it照我看来, what is impor tant (serious)重要(严重)的是, I?m afraid恐怕, it is said据说等。?1. It will result in success, I suppose.

2, But there is one of her sisters sitting down just behind you, who is very pretty, and I dare say very agreeable.
very pretty 和 very agreeable 是平列关系。

3, I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men.
I'll do it when the humour takes me. in no humour 没有心情。

4, She told the story however with great spirit among her friends; for she had a lively, playful disposition, which delighted in any thing ridiculous.
