 1. Attorneys for a Texas nurse accused of fatally shooting a mother and speeding away with the dying woman's newborn son say they plan to evaluate her mental state. Lawyers for Verna McClain say she was confused, visibly upset and mumbling to them during a brief court hearing Thursday which was delayed until next week. 

 
 
 
2. A team of police officers and FBI agents began tearing apart a New York City basement. It is part of a decades-old investigation into the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz. Etan vanished without a trace in 1979 after leaving his family's Manhattan apartment for a short walk to catch a school bus.
 
 
 
3. Republicans have pushed an election-year, 46-billion-dollar tax cut for most employers through a sharply divided House. The bill will go nowhere in the Democratic-controlled Senate, and the White House says President Barack Obama would veto it anyway.
 
 
 
4. And NASA has turned space shuttle Discovery over to the Smithsonian Institution, which is putting it on display at the National Air and Space Museum annex near Dulles Airport in Virginia. Discovery will be displayed as if it just landed with its large payload bay doors closed.
