英闻天下——385 FM: China to be More Actively Involved in Int'l Affairs(在线收听

At a news conference in Beijing on Saturday on the sidelines of the ongoing annual session of China's top legislature and top advisory body, Yang Jiechi said China will play a more critical role in international affairs.

"China has participated in and contributed to the building of the international system, and we will be more actively involved in international affairs and play a due role in making the international system more just and equitable. We will continue to unswervingly follow the path of peaceful development, resolutely uphold China's sovereignty, security and development interests."

With regard to regional issues, Yang Jiechi has urged Japan to take real steps to correct its mistakes concerning the Diaoyu islands issue and prevent the current tension from escalating or getting out of control.

"Japan's action has violated China's territorial sovereignty, greatly damaged China-Japan relations and undermined the stability in this region as well. We urge Japan to make concrete efforts to improve its relations with China and play a positive and responsible role in maintaining peace, stability and development in the region."

Yang urged Japan to correctly recognize and reflect on history and make it an important foundation for China-Japan relations.

In the meantime, Yang pointed out sanctions were not the fundamental way of solving the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.

"North Korea conducted its third nuclear test, and tensions on the peninsula once again heightened. This is not what we want to see. We call on all relevant parties to bear in mind the larger interest, stay calm, exercise restraint, and refrain from taking any moves that may further worsen the situation."

He suggested the only correct solution to the North Korea nuclear issue was to hold negotiations and resolve all parties' concerns in a comprehensive and balanced way.

With an increasing number of Chinese nationals traveling abroad, Yang Jiechi hailed China's foreign missions' role in safeguarding the security of Chinese citizens overseas.

"We have properly handled hundreds of thousands of consulate protection and assistance cases involving overseas Chinese nationals and agencies. We will continue to deliver high-quality consular services to our overseas Chinese nationals and companies and deliver a good performance in our job to serve and benefit our citizens."

Yang Jiechi also announced China's new president will visit Russia to improve the Sino-Russian strategic partnership and attend the BRICS leaders' summit in South Africa.

Meanwhile, Yang said China would host next year's APEC leader's meeting.
