英闻天下——416 UN Appeals More Funds for Syrian Refugees(在线收听

The United Nations has warned an unprecedented acceleration of humanitarian crisis in Syria as the country has suffered more conflicts.

The UN has also called for more funds from all governments to support the victims in Syria's civil war.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres made the appeal on occasion of the second anniversary of the uprising against Bashar Assad's regime.

"There is a widening gap between the needs of the people suffering the impact of the Syrian crisis and the resources available to support them and to support the host countries. There is no way to fill this gap if we only use the traditional, humanitarian aid budgets and other instruments of humanitarian support. And that is why I appeal to all governments and all parliaments to approve extraordinary funds to support the Syrian victims and the countries hosting them."

In the meantime, UN World Food Programme says the donation for Syrian refugees is far less than enough.

  Elisabeth Byrs, WFP's spokesperson:

"We need an immediate 156 million US dollars to continue to provide vital food to Syrians affected by the conflict until June. We need to have three months funding in the pipeline."

According to the UN refugee agency, some four million Syrian people, making up almost one fifth of the country's population have been displaced in the past two years.

The number of registered refugees in neighboring countries has exceeded one million.

It is estimated that more than 70-thousand Syrian people have been killed.
