英闻天下——427 Syria's Opposition Elects PM of Interim Gov't(在线收听

Syria's opposition coalition has elected Ghassan Hitto to head an interim government to administer the areas that rebel forces have seized from the government.

Hitto, an American-educated IT manager and Islamic activist, received 35 votes from 48 ballots cast by the Syrian National Coalition's 63 active members during a meeting in Istanbul.

"Thank you very much. Tomorrow there will be a speech and you will hear through the speech the program and an introduction of the highlights of the plan for the near future."

Hitto has lived in the United States for decades and recently moved from Texas to Turkey to help coordinate aid to rebel-held areas.

Coalition members are hoping the new government will unite the rebels fighting against President Basher al Assad's forces, and provide services to Syrians living in rebel-held areas.

Hitto's election comes after two failed attempts to form an interim government due to infighting within the opposition.

The new government is though to face major challenges though, starting with its ability to be recognized by the rebel factions on the ground.
