英闻天下——439 UK Ideal Home Show Highlights Space & Energy Saving(在线收听

As a greater proportion of Britons live alone, the demand for one bedroom, space efficient solutions is increasing. The UK Ideal Home Exhibition has the latest ideas to maximize space in smaller homes and energy saving ideas. Our reporter Wang Xiao has the details.

The Ideal Home Show has been the first word in current home styles since 1908. It features dozens of stands which showcase the latest labor saving products and the latest trends such as a series of top end audio speakers. It also leads the way in the latest in eco-homes and gadgets.

A show home at the exhibition has been designed and built to the tightest specifications to ensure it is as energy efficient as possible.

It is beautiful, functional and very eco- friendly.

Deputy Director for Green Deal Demand, UK Department Energy and Climate Change David Thomas says there are many ways people can make their own homes just as green.

"Make sure your loft is properly insulated because a lot of heat escapes through that. You might want double glazing to reduce the drafts and also to have greater thermal efficiency. But in particular what you can do, which you haven't been able to do very much up until now in the UK, is that you can put insulation in the walls. A lot of heat is lost through the walls – much more than you might think."

But insulation is just one way houses are becoming more environmentally friendly. All houses built in Britain now have to be assessed under the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The code, which was implemented in 2012, is a standard across Britain for assessing then rating and certifying the sustainable energy performance of new homes.

Director of Scandinavian Homes Ltd Dave Gittins says it means all buildings built in Britain will be greener than those built in the past.

"The point about the Code for Sustainable Homes is to try to reduce the impact of your house and your living style on the planet. So by devising all these technologies industry has enabled us to become much more self sufficient. If we incorporate all of these technologies in the house then it gets us more towards a low carbon house or a zero carbon house."

The show runs until April 1 at London's Earls Court Exhibition Center.
