1. Investigators are looking into what went wrong during a training exercise in Nevada's high desert. A mortar shell explosion killed seven Marines and injured a half dozen others. 

 

2. The death toll in a series of bombings throughout Baghdad is now at least 56 with more than 200 wounded. The violence marks 10 years to the day that Washington announced the start of the US invasion in Iraq. 

 

3. An assault weapons ban won't be part of the gun control measure the Senate will begin debating next month. California Democrat Dianne Feinstein says she has been told by Majority Leader Harry Reid that instead of being included in the measure, the ban will be offered as an amendment.

 

4. And in the Ukraine, the parliament was briefly suspended. That's after lawmakers brawled with opposition politicians over the language used in a speech.
