MONTEVIDEO, July 31 (Xinhua) -- An Uruguayan judge Wednesday ordered the detention in prison of 10 members of a drug trafficking ring who were caught earlier this week with almost half a ton of marijuana shipped in from neighboring Paraguay, media reports said.

Judge Adriana De los Santos also indicted two women on charges of selling drugs and issued an international warrant against two Paraguayan citizens. The women were sentenced to 60 days probation.
The suspects were arrested Monday as part of an anti-narcotics operation by police who intercepted a light aircraft that carried 478 kg of marijuana from Paraguay and landed in a rural area of eastern Rocha Department.
The police arrested 22 members of the gang in all and seized the contraband, two trucks that were standing by to transport the cargo, and several firearms. But Judge Santos, who specializes in organized crime cases, released 12 of the detainees.
Most of the detainees will face charges of transporting, importing and selling illicit drugs.
The gang has been under investigation for five months, according to Anti-Drug Trafficking Office (DGRTID) Director Cesar Sosa, who said the gang "has been dismantled, because all the people we knew to be involved have been arrested."
