The Korean Peninsula was divided along the 38 parallel after Japan's surrender. In 1950 the North attacked the South, starting the Korean War.

 
The US supported the South, the Soviets the North and Kim Il Sun rose as the country's founder. The Korea agrees to stop fighting in 1953 but refused to sign a truce.
 
Despite signing a nuclear ban in 1991, the North refused inspections at its site. The country's founder died in 1994. But his son Kim Jung Il kept dynasty alive. In 2006, the North conducted the first of three nuclear tests. When Kim Jung Il died in 2011, his son Kim Jung Un took over, ignoring the 1953 agreement and focusing attention on building weapons capable of heading US soil.
