US Vice President Joseph Biden is due to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday for a series of meetings with Chinese leaders including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.

Reporter: “This visit has been long planned by the United States but the focus is now sharply on reducing regional tensions following China’s announcement of the Air Defense Identification Zone. What can Vice President Joseph Biden actually do to ease concerns?”

“As you said he’s doing shadow diplomacy. He’s gone to Japan, he’s going to Seoul, so in that sense he’s also a negotiator, he’s trying to be a channel of communication for this region so I think this is a well planned trip not only by the US but by Chinese too, we worked together. Everyone knows, they see the tension here and China I think has a 100 reasons to make that announcement. I think right now maybe China and the United States can sit down and talk and try to work out some other strategies with Japan, with South Korea.” Professor Sun said.

Reporter: “Biden is considered to have a good relationship with China’s President Xi Jinping having met a number of times in the last couple of years. What role will that play?”

“When they met last time Xi Jinping told a joke - how he could help Biden to become the President. So I think when Biden comes here he’ll learn more about Xi Jinping’s philosophy of governance, how he rules the country. That is very important because when Xi Jinping was Vice President his way of thoughts, thinking might be a little different. So I think it’s very good for Biden to come again. We can work together as two engines of one airplane, if we work together we can fly high.” Professor Sun said.
