Five new human cases of the H7N9 bird flu virus were reported over the weekend.

Health authorities in east China’s Zhejiang Province reported three new cases. One of them was a 75-year-old woman who has already died. The two others are in a critical condition. These three cases bring the total reported in Zhejiang Province to seven this year.

Meanwhile, South China’s Guangdong Province reported two new cases, with one in Shenzhen, the other in Guangzhou. The patient in Guangzhou is in a critical condition. He is the first person to be confirmed to have the virus in the city.

So far this year, human cases of bird flu have also been reported in Fujian and Jiangsu provinces, and in Shanghai.
