 1. The polar vortex continues to drive temperatures down as much as the eastern United States battles wind chills below zero. Freezing temperatures set record lows with some areas colder than much of Antarctic. Fortunately, temperatures are expected to slowly rise throughout the week. 

 
2. Olympic Gold Medalist, Lindsey Vonn will not be defending her title in Sochi in next month. The 29-year-old Alpine Skiing star has been battling a knee injury from last year. She is scheduled for surgery soon and hopes to return for the world championship in 2015.
 
3. With help from 6 republicans, the Senate unexpectedly advances efforts to revive expired benefits for the long-term unemployed. President Obama applauded the outcome but the Republican controlled House will also have to vote for the measure. 
 
4. Former NBA star Dennis Rodman led a group of American basketball players to train with young North Koreans ahead of an exhibition match. Rodman has received criticisms over his involvement in North Korea and pleaded with Americans not to treat the players negatively when they return to the US.
