CARACAS, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela began Monday to implement a new price control law that limits company profits as part of the government's efforts to tame inflation.
The new Fair Price Law sets a maximum profit margin of 30 percent and carries prison sentences of up to 14 years for those who committed such crimes as hoarding, food trafficking and destabilizing the economy.
The National Superintendence for the Defense of Socioeconomic Rights, a price enforcement agency, will review all prices and determine profit margins based on cost structure, distribution and marketing.
The research results will be published this week, Karlin Granadillo, head of the price enforcement agency said.
She said that not all items are subjected to the 30 percent profit margin, otherwise, it would distort the economy.
The study also provide tools for companies to determine prices in accordance with the new law without direct state intervention, she said.
The effect of the measure would be felt in the coming days, Granadillo said, stressing no companies in the country can get a 1000 or 400 percent profit as was discovered last November.
President Nicolas Maduro set Monday as the deadline for all companies to adjust their prices.
