默克尔会见乌克兰反对派领导人

BERLIN, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Ukrainian opposition leaders here on Monday, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement posted on the German government's website.

The chancellor held talks with Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of the Fatherland party, and boxer-turned-politician and head of the UDAR party Vitaly Klitschko on the current situation in Ukraine.
Both sides agreed that it is important to stop violence happening again amid the extremely tense situation in Ukraine. They also said civil rights must be protected and a democratic solution be found to the crisis in the country.
Merkel said the agreement on an amnesty for detained protesters is a positive step and it is time to push ahead with progress on forming a government and constitutional reform.
The chancellor pledged that Germany and the European Union would do anything to contribute to a positive outcome of the crisis.
In a bid to end a nearly three-month-old unrest, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Jan. 31 signed into law a bill that grants amnesty to all detained protesters.
Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka said on Friday last week that the Ukrainian police have released all those arrested during recent anti-government protests.
To back the country's European integration, massive protests have been taking place nationwide since November. The rallies turned violent on Jan. 19 when radical activists attacked riot police with fireworks and petrol bombs.
The unrest has so far left at least four people dead and hundreds of others, including police officers, injured.
