With enough of a flourish to guarantee the class's attention, he went to the front of the room, near one edge of the board. Then, clearing his throat, he drew a coathook right near one of the protruding nails. He proceeded to hang his coat and hat on the hook that he had drawn in chalk (really on the nail, of course). Then he went on to give that day's lecture. He told us that the entire class had their eyes to the front of the room throughout the lecture. He didn't know if they'd heard a single word he'd said, but at least they looked attentive. 为了吸引全班同学的注意，他大模大样地走到了教室的前面，站在黑板边。接着，他清了清嗓子，在黑板上画了一个衣帽钩，而这个钩子恰好就在一枚突出的铁钉旁边。随后，他便把自己的大衣和帽子挂在了用粉笔画的钩子上，其实，当然是挂在了铁钉上。然后，他开始讲课。据老师说，整节课全班都把视线集中到了教室的前方，虽然不知道他们是否在用心听课，但至少看上去聚精会神。
At the end of the class, the lecturer would usually leave by a small door near the blackboards, while the class would leave through the large doors at the back of the hall. When class was over, he took his coat and hat, erased the coathook, and left through the small door--and was followed by the entire class, lining up to go past the blackboard to see how he'd done it.
通常下课后，老师会从黑板旁边的小门离开，而学生则分别走礼堂后面的几扇大门。当那堂课结束后，老师拿起大衣和帽子，擦掉那个衣帽钩，如往常一样从小门离去。可这一次不同的是，整个班的学生都跟随在他后面，排队走过黑板去看看老师刚才究竟是如何做的！ |
