CCTV9英语新闻:香港宠物巴士为宠物主人们带来方便(在线收听

Every Sunday, a different pet-friendly park in the city.

"Of course there is a need for this service, there are no other public facilities to take our pets around except for taxis or private cars, and renting a van is very expensive," Koey Yau, pet owner in Hong Kong said.

Pets are forbidden on almost all public transport in Hong Kong. Access to pet-friendly places is difficult. Taxis are too expensive for long-distance travel.

"A dedicated pet bus service provides pet owners a cheaper way to bring their pets to places other than areas just near their own homes. This service also allows the pets and pet owners to go to more places like dog parks to explore and play together," Kamric to Kamwai, 99 bus founder said.

The company’s one bus does two or three round trip routes a day.

The founder admits it has not been an easy journey, as he’s still relying solely on the collected bus fare to cover operational costs. But he thinks the benefits still outweigh the shortcomings, and is optimistic.

"We hope the 99 Bus will help change the mindset of many Hong Kong people towards pets in public areas, and encourage them not to discriminate against pet owners using public transportation. And ultimately we hope we can achieve the goal of humans and pets being able to share open space equally," Kamric said.

But the service’s future is still uncertain, as a long-term sponsor is needed to help offset the costs of running a regular service. Extra funding would also help the company add more facilities on the bus to make the pets even safer.
