In East China’s Anhui Province, heavy rains posed serious challenges to the drainage system of many cities. Owners of street-level shops piled sand bags to prevent flooding and local traffic police responded in full force.

"We have deployed everyone we have to patrol on major roads in the city. There are many stalled cars because of the flood, so we need to push them to the side the streets, and warn other drivers," Xu Zhonghua, Traffic police in Suzhou city in Anhui Province said.

Huangshan Mountain park, a popular tourist destination in Anhui Province, was forced to close. Several people working at the tourist spot were trapped by a flash flood. A rescue team was dispatched to help them to safety. At the same time, a major hillside road connecting the mountainous area was cut by a landslide.

"The landslide was more than 10 meters wide. We are putting warning signs on both sides of the road, to stop more accidents from happening," Zhang Bin, Anqing highway bureau, Anhui Province said.

Meanwhile, as the centre of tropical storm Matmo moved into east China’s Shandong Province, several ports in the province took measures to prepare for the storms arrival. Starting Friday, shipping routes from the city of Yantai were suspended, at least for the next two days.

"We have prepared flood-control materials. And a 24-hour patrol team in case of emergency," Xie Yongwu, Yantai port said.

Meanwhile, rainstorms led to massive flight delays in Qingdao city. Some 40 flights had been cancelled by noon on Friday.
