Full coverage: Air Algerie Flight Lost Radar Contact after Takeoff French President Francois Hollande has issued a statement, saying Air Algerie flight AH-5017 with 116 people onboard, crashed in Mali, near the border with Burkina Faso. The statement says France has dispatched a military unit to secure the site in Mali.

There was some initial confusion over where the plane actually crashed. On Thursday, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita said wreckage of the plane was found in northern Mali. But, officials now say human remains and burnt wreckage have been found in the south, about 50 kilometers from the border of Burkina Faso.

French officials say the plane was unlikely to have been the victim of an attack. Air navigation services lost track of the plane about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The flight was bound for the Algerian capital, Algiers. Most of the passengers were from France and Burkina Faso. All the crew were Spanish.
