Much of the quake impact was felt at the town of Ludian. The town and its surrounding areas have been prone to earthquakes.

Within a 200-kilometer radius of the quake center, 44 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or above have been recorded in the past. The area is also relatively densely populated, registering 265 people per square kilometer.

The houses, most of which are made from bricks and wood, are also susceptible to tremors.
