The death toll from the 6.5-magnitude quake that rocked Southwest China’s Yunnan Province on Sunday has risen to 589. More than 2,400 are injured and another nine are reported missing. Rescuers are risking their lives to clear roads, restore communication lines and water supplies.

More than 72 hours have passed since the earthquake hit Longtoushan Township, 23 kilometers southwest of the county seat of Ludian, in Zhaotong city. The main road leading to Lu-dian County has been cleared and reopened. A bridge leading to Long-tou-shan Township has become passable for delivery of relief supplies.

Over one million people in Ludian and neighboring counties have been affected. Nearly 230,000 have been relocated to safer areas. China has mobilized four satellites to work in the quake-stricken zone, detecting and providing image data to support the rescue work.

A total of 221-million yuan have been donated for victims. Over 400 tons of relief goods have reached the quake zone, and more are set to arrive on Thursday.
