Modern samba was born in the poorer areas of Rio, and left-wing singers were inspired by the new samba do morro, samba from the hills, that dealt with the harsh realities of life in communities where there were few facilities to cope with the newcomers.

But a new and very different popular music was emerging from the working-class areas of Rio, that would bring Brazil new international attention and infuriate the left.

Jorge Ben, who later changed his name to Jorge Ben Jor, made use of / electric guitars, condemned by the left because of their association with America and foreign influences. But his songs would transform Brazilian music, and have been continually re-recorded until the present day. Jorge Ben had started out playing bossa nova, but his first major hit, Mas Que Nada, mixed samba with maracatu, a rhythm from the northern countryside.
